SHEFFIELD, Iowa – December 14, 2007 – Corn producers can reduce their crop insurance premiums significantly in 2008 by planting hybrids with specific triple-stack genetics, according to an announcement yesterday by the Risk Management Agency (RMA). Thirty products in Latham Hi-Tech Hybrids’ 2008 corn lineup qualify for the Biotech Yield Endorsement (BYE) pilot project.

“The BYE program is an innovative new crop insurance program that recognizes growers who plant hybrids with YieldGard® Triple-Stack technology are indeed reducing their risks,” says John Latham, president, Latham Hi-Tech Hybrids. “Triple-stack hybrids do much more than just protect against corn borers and rootworms. The bigger root systems also provide big benefits in drier years. Our customers are seeing great value in the trait system combined with unique Latham genetics that are bred to perform in our marketing area.”

Participation in the BYE project will lower insurance premiums for corn growers in Illinois, Indiana, Iowa and Minnesota. The average discount will be more than $2 per acre on all of participating grower’s corn acres, including refuge acres. To qualify, growers must plant at least 75 percent of their corn acres on an insured unit basis to qualifying triple-stack hybrids that contain YieldGard® Plus with Roundup Ready® Corn 2 or YieldGard VT Triple™. EPA-mandated refuge requirements must also be respected.

“This is an exciting announcement for so many reasons,” says Latham. “Our customers are very concerned about rising input costs, and this announcement will actually reduce those costs. Plus, Latham research and yield data has consistently shown that triple-stack hybrids offer higher yields, maximum insect protection, plus their larger root systems allow corn plants to absorb as much as three inches of additional moisture throughout the growing season. Now even the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Risk Management Agency is acknowledging that triple-stack genetics help corn growers reduce their risk.”
